Nepal's Political Landscape Sees Significant Partnership Forged Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The September revolt was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Consultations Taking Place

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of major political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
