Conservative responses to the limited release of files related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the previous administration highlighting the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in images, while others expressed frustration over how extensive censorship cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative light.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Administration representatives justified the heavily censored sections with fervent exaggerated language. “Never in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this transparent with the public about such a sensitive legal issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter describing the censorship process.
Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's identity and image are visible in portions of the materials, the widespread redactions raise serious concerns about the information may be hidden behind them. Some Republicans immediately demanded greater transparency.
“People are furious and disengaging,” posted Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the statute, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may attempt to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s document release egregiously fails to adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the act,” he continued.
A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Swing Behind the Release
But, some rightwing pundits and Trump allies came out strongly in support of the administration.
The release—originating from a justice department led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the men depicted in pictures have their identities blacked out.
Yet a few do not, including high-profile figures like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, allowed some rightwing figures to launch the attack.
“It’s pretty ironic how the political left wrongly claimed President Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Clinton Campaign Releases Response
Bill Clinton has consistently said he was aware of no criminal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been concealing those files for months only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“This is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and hide forever. So they can release as many low-quality decades-old photos as they desire, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response concluded.
Overall Rightwing Comment Seems Subdued
However, broader comment on the right was comparatively subdued following the disclosure, especially when compared with the loud demands for transparency that came before the congressional approval to enact a bill requiring the files' release.
The commentator, who recently secured media access at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest proponents for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi specifically after a group of conservative personalities were provided physical binders of materials that included little new data.
